Front suspension bushings on the E46 don't fail dramatically — they just slowly go soft, and by the time you notice, you've adjusted to the vague steering and extra clunk over bumps without realizing how much has changed. A front-end refresh with polyurethane sway bar bushings and fresh lower control arm hardware brings back the sharp, planted feel these chassis are known for, and it's a very doable weekend job.

Tools You'll Need

Lower control arm prying tool, S-hook pry bar Ball joint separator in use on suspension Coil spring compressor set, 2-piece Set of polyurethane sway bar bushings, BMW E46

You'll also want penetrating oil for the sway bar end link and control arm bolts (these are notorious for seizing on E46s that have seen winter roads), a torque wrench, and jack stands rated for the job.

Step 1: Soak the Fasteners First

Do this the night before if you can. E46 control arm bolts and sway bar end links corrode in place more often than not, and trying to break them loose dry is how you end up snapping a bolt in the subframe.

Step 2: Remove the Sway Bar End Links and Bracket

Disconnect the end links from the sway bar, then remove the sway bar mounting brackets to free the bar enough to access the bushings.

Step 3: Swap the Sway Bar Bushings

Slide the old rubber bushings off and replace with the polyurethane bushings. Grease the inner bore with silicone-based bushing grease before reinstalling — poly bushings need lubrication to avoid squeaking, unlike rubber. Reinstall the brackets and torque to spec.

Step 4: Separate the Ball Joint

With the lower control arm supported, use the ball joint separator to break the taper free from the steering knuckle. Don't hammer on the knuckle directly to "shock" it loose — use the separator's mechanical force instead to avoid damaging the knuckle or boot.

Step 5: Remove and Service the Lower Control Arm

Unbolt the control arm from the subframe. If you're only refreshing bushings on the arm itself (rather than replacing the whole arm), press the old bushing out and the new one in per your bushing kit's instructions.

Step 6: Reinstall with the Prying Tool

Getting a fresh, tighter bushing to line back up with its mounting point is exactly what the prying tool is for — it gives you the leverage to align the arm without three hands and a curse word. Reinstall the ball joint into the knuckle and torque everything to spec, ideally with the suspension loaded (at ride height, or as close as you can simulate on stands) rather than fully drooped, since bushing torque specs on most cars assume ride-height loading to avoid pre-stressing the rubber or poly.

Step 7: If You're Pulling the Strut

Should you decide to address the springs, mounts, or struts themselves while everything's apart, the coil spring compressor is essential — never attempt to remove a strut assembly with a loaded spring uncontained. Compress evenly from both sides before loosening the strut mount nut.

Step 8: Torque Check and Alignment

Recheck every fastener you touched once the car's back on the ground. A front-end refresh like this changes your alignment settings even if you didn't touch the tie rods — budget for a full alignment afterward rather than skipping it.

Common Mistakes

  • Skipping the penetrating oil soak — the fastest way to snap a bolt in an E46 subframe
  • Torquing bushings at full droop — pre-loads the rubber/poly incorrectly and shortens its life
  • Forgetting the alignment afterward — fresh bushings change how the suspension geometry settles
  • Dry-fitting polyurethane bushings — they need grease; rubber doesn't, poly does
