That rattling or freewheeling noise from the front of the engine at idle that fades as RPM climbs is a textbook symptom of a failing alternator overrunning (freewheel) pulley — not the alternator itself, and definitely not always the serpentine belt, even though that's the first thing most people replace. The freewheel pulley is a one-way clutch built into the pulley hub that lets the alternator spin smoothly through the natural speed fluctuations of the belt drive. When the clutch mechanism inside wears out, you get noise, and eventually belt wear or a dead alternator from the added strain.

You'll also want the correct replacement pulley for your specific alternator (these are not universal across engine families, even within VW/Audi), and a way to hold the serpentine belt tensioner released while you work.
Step 1: Confirm the Diagnosis
With the engine running and the hood up (carefully, and from a safe distance from moving belts), a rattle that's most pronounced at idle and smooths out as RPM rises, especially right after a cold start, is the classic freewheel pulley pattern. A worn serpentine belt tends to squeal rather than rattle, and alternator bearing failure tends to be a more constant whine that doesn't change character with idle vs. load the same way.
Step 2: Release Belt Tension
Using a breaker bar or the appropriate tool on the automatic tensioner, relieve tension and slip the serpentine belt off the alternator pulley (and fully off if you need clear access).
Step 3: Identify Your Pulley's Drive Type
The freewheel pulley's center bolt uses one of several drive types depending on the alternator design — internal hex, internal Torx, or a splined pattern. This is exactly why the 13-piece set exists rather than a single bit — confirm which one fits your pulley before you commit force to it.
Step 4: Counter-Hold and Remove
The freewheel pulley only turns freely in one direction by design, which actually helps here — with the correct bit engaged in the center bolt and the pulley counter-held (many of these can be held by hand due to the one-way clutch, but check your specific design), break the center bolt loose. Never use an impact wrench on this without confirming your specific pulley design tolerates it; some internal clutch mechanisms are damaged by impact force transmitted through the bolt.
Step 5: Inspect the Alternator Shaft
With the old pulley off, check the alternator shaft splines for wear or damage before installing the new pulley — a worn shaft won't be fixed by a new pulley alone.
Step 6: Install the New Pulley
Thread the new freewheel pulley onto the alternator shaft and torque the center bolt to the factory spec for your specific alternator.
Step 7: Reinstall the Belt and Test
Route the serpentine belt back over the pulley per the routing diagram (usually printed on a sticker under the hood), release the tensioner back into place, and start the engine. The rattle should be gone. Let it idle for a few minutes and listen closely before considering the job done.
Common Mistakes
- Replacing the belt first and stopping there — a common and understandable first guess, but it won't fix a worn freewheel clutch
- Using the wrong bit and rounding out the center bolt — confirm the drive type before applying force
- Impacting a pulley not rated for it — can shear the internal clutch mechanism
- Skipping the belt routing diagram — an incorrectly routed serpentine belt can damage other accessories fast
