The EA288 common-rail diesel found across the VW/Audi/SEAT/Skoda 1.4, 1.6, and 2.0 TDI lineup shares the same fundamental locked-TDC principle as a petrol timing belt job — but it adds one extra player that catches people who've only done gas engines off guard: the high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) sprocket, which also needs to be locked and correctly re-timed. Get the crank and cam locked but forget the HPFP step, and you can end up with a fueling fault that has nothing to do with the belt itself.

You'll also need a torque wrench and standard hand tools for the accessory drive and covers, and it's worth confirming your exact engine code before ordering belts or parts, since EA288 spans several sub-variants across different model years.

What Makes This Different From a Petrol Timing Job

On EA211/EA888 petrol engines, you're locking two things: the crankshaft and the camshaft(s). On EA288 TDI, there's a third: the high-pressure fuel pump, which is belt-driven off the same system and has its own sprocket that can be loosened and re-timed independently of the cam and crank. If you loosen the HPFP sprocket bolt (which you may need to do to fit the belt) without locking it first, you lose your reference point and the pump can end up timed incorrectly relative to the engine — a mistake that shows up as a fueling or starting problem, not a mechanical one.

Step 1: Remove Covers and Accessory Drive

Strip the serpentine belt, covers, and anything blocking access to the crank pulley and timing components, same as any belt job.

Step 2: Rotate to TDC on Cylinder 1

Bring the crankshaft to Top Dead Center on cylinder 1 using the timing marks specified for your exact engine code.

Step 3: Lock the Crankshaft

Fit the crankshaft locking tool — on EA288, this tool locates around the crank gear itself rather than through a separate access hole, which is different from older TDI generations, so don't assume the older procedure applies here.

Step 4: Lock the Camshaft

Insert the camshaft locking pin from the timing kit into the specified hole in the camshaft sprocket/hub.

Step 5: Lock the HPFP Sprocket — Don't Skip This

Before loosening the HPFP sprocket bolt for belt removal, insert the HPFP locking pin behind the sprocket to preserve its timed position, and use the counter-hold tool on the sprocket itself when you break the bolt loose. This is the step that's genuinely unique to TDI and easy to miss if you're used to petrol EA211/EA888 jobs.

Step 6: Remove the Old Belt

With all three components locked, release the tensioner and remove the belt.

Step 7: Install the New Belt and Verify

Install the new belt working around all three sprockets, keeping tension on the non-tensioner side. Once installed, verify every lock is still correctly seated before releasing anything — crank, cam, and HPFP.

Step 8: Set Tension, Torque the HPFP Bolt, and Double-Check

Set belt tension per the tool's specification, then torque the HPFP sprocket bolt to spec while it's still counter-held. Remove all three locking tools, rotate the engine two full turns by hand, bring it back to TDC, and confirm all three locks re-seat cleanly — exactly the same double-check principle as a petrol job, just with one more thing to verify.
