Gravity-filling a VW or Audi cooling system is a coin flip. The layout of the hoses, the expansion tank position, and the number of high points in the system make it easy to trap a pocket of air that won't bleed out on its own — which shows up later as a fluctuating temp gauge, a weak heater, or a system that keeps needing topped off. The fix isn't patience, it's vacuum.

You'll also need the correct coolant type and concentration for your engine (VAG platforms are picky about this — using the wrong coolant chemistry can cause corrosion issues down the line even if the levels look fine) and a way to safely support the car if you need access to a bleed screw.
Why Gravity-Filling Fails on These Cars
Most VW/Audi cooling systems fill from the top of the expansion tank, but the routing underneath includes multiple loops — through the block, head, heater core, and often an oil cooler or turbo feed — that sit above the fill point in places. Air rises, but it can only rise as far as the nearest high point in a hose run, and it'll sit there indefinitely unless something actively pulls it out.
Step 1: Cold Engine, System Fully Drained or Empty
This method works whether you're doing a full coolant change or just topping off after a water pump, thermostat, or hose job. Make sure the engine is cold before opening anything.
Step 2: Connect the Vacuum Tool to the Expansion Tank
Remove the expansion tank cap and fit the cone adapter from the vacuum purge kit in its place, sized to seal against the filler neck.
Step 3: Pull a Vacuum on the Empty System
Connect the tool to a compressed air source (most of these kits are venturi-style and run off shop air) and pull vacuum until the gauge holds steady. A system that holds vacuum is sealed with no leaks — which is itself a useful leak check before you put a drop of coolant in. If the gauge won't hold, stop and find the leak first; there's no point vacuum-filling a system that's going to let air back in from a bad hose clamp or a bad radiator cap seal anyway.
Step 4: Draw Coolant In Under Vacuum
With the vacuum held, open the valve to the coolant supply line. The vacuum draws the coolant mixture into the empty system on its own, filling every passage from the bottom up with no air pocket left behind, because there was no air in the system to begin with.
Step 5: Release, Top Off, and Verify
Once the system stops drawing fluid, release the vacuum, top the expansion tank to the correct cold-fill mark, and reinstall the cap. Start the engine and let it run to operating temperature with the heater on full, watching the temp gauge for a normal, steady climb (a system with trapped air will show a needle that jumps around as pockets shift).
Step 6: Recheck Cold
Let the car sit and cool completely, then recheck the level. Top off if needed — this is normal even on a good fill as the system settles.
Signs You Still Have Air in the System
- Temp gauge needle that jumps or fluctuates instead of climbing steadily
- Weak or intermittent heat from the vents
- Gurgling sounds from the dash or engine bay after startup
- Coolant level that keeps dropping even with no visible leak
If any of these show up after a vacuum fill, the most likely cause isn't a fill technique problem — it's a leak somewhere that's letting air back in, which is worth chasing down before it becomes a bigger issue.
