Mercedes-Benz's 7G-Tronic and 9G-Tronic automatic transmissions (722.9 and 725.0 families) don't have a dipstick, and the fill level isn't a simple "add until full" job — it's temperature-dependent, using an overflow tube inside the pan to define the correct level at a specific fluid temperature. Get the temperature wrong and you'll either underfill (leading to shift quality problems and premature wear) or overfill (leading to aeration and its own set of problems). This is exactly the job this tool exists to do correctly.
Tool You'll Need
- Transmission Oil Filling Tool (725 589 00 90 00) — fills through the drain plug hole with the correct adapter and shut-off control
You'll also need the correct spec fluid for your transmission generation (these transmissions are picky about exact fluid spec — don't substitute based on "it's just ATF"), a new drain plug and sealing washer (typically one-time-use), a way to read fluid temperature at the pan (an infrared thermometer works well, though a scan tool reading transmission fluid temp directly is more precise), and a torque wrench.
Why Temperature Matters Here
ATF expands as it heats up. The overflow pipe inside the pan is calibrated to define "full" at a specific fluid temperature — commonly cited in the neighborhood of 45°C (roughly 113°F), though confirm the exact spec for your transmission generation rather than assuming a universal number. Fill it cold and it'll appear full but actually be low once it heats up and expands past that mark; fill it hot and you risk overfilling once it cools and contracts.
Step 1: Warm the Transmission to the Correct Temperature
Run the vehicle through P-R-D and back several times to circulate fluid and bring the transmission up toward the target temperature, monitoring via scan tool if you have one, or by feel/infrared thermometer at the pan if you don't.
Step 2: Remove the Drain Plug
With the vehicle safely raised and supported, remove the drain plug and let the old fluid drain fully.
Step 3: Connect the Filling Tool
Thread the filling tool's adapter into the drain plug hole and connect your fluid supply.
Step 4: Pump Fluid In
Pump new fluid in through the tool, working in stages rather than dumping it all at once — you'll be checking the overflow point as you go, not filling to a fixed total quantity.
Step 5: Reach Temperature and Watch the Overflow
Once the transmission is at the correct target temperature, let excess fluid drain from the overflow tube until it slows to an intermittent drip rather than a steady stream — this is the correct full level at that temperature, even though it's a somewhat subjective judgment call in practice.
Step 6: Reinstall the Drain Plug
Disconnect the filling tool, fit a new sealing washer, and torque the drain plug to the factory spec for your transmission generation.
Step 7: Verify
Cycle through the gears again, recheck for any leaks at the drain plug, and confirm shift quality feels normal on a test drive.
Common Mistakes
- Filling cold and calling it done — the level is only accurate at the correct fluid temperature
- Using the wrong fluid spec — these transmissions are specific about ATF spec across different production years
- Reusing the old drain plug washer — a fresh seal is cheap insurance against a weep
