A battery can show a perfectly normal voltage at rest and still fail the moment it's actually asked to do real work — which is exactly why a simple voltmeter reading can miss a dying battery entirely. A load test puts the battery under a controlled electrical demand and watches how the voltage holds up, which is a much closer simulation of what a cold start actually demands of it.

Tool You'll Need
- BT-100 Battery Load Tester & Voltmeter, 12V/6V — applies a load and reads the voltage response on an analog gauge
You'll also want basic PPE (batteries can vent hydrogen gas and contain acid) and a clean set of terminals to clamp onto — corrosion at the terminal will give you a false low reading that's about the connection, not the battery.
Step 1: Check the Resting Voltage First
With the engine off and the car sitting for at least a few hours (ideally overnight), check resting voltage. A healthy, fully charged 12V battery should read in the neighborhood of 12.4–12.6V at rest. Meaningfully below that, charge the battery fully before load testing — testing a battery that's simply undercharged will give you a misleading result about its actual health.
Step 2: Clean the Terminals
Wipe down or brush any corrosion off the terminals before clamping on. A poor connection here undermines every reading that follows.
Step 3: Connect the Tester
Clamp the BT-100's red lead to positive and black to negative, matched to the correct polarity every time — double-check before applying any load.
Step 4: Apply the Load
Engage the tester's load switch for the duration specified in the tool's instructions (typically a short window, not a sustained one — extended load testing can itself stress a marginal battery unnecessarily). Watch the gauge's colored zones as the load is applied.
Step 5: Read the Result
A battery that holds voltage within the gauge's "good" zone under load is healthy. One that sags into the "weak" or "replace" zone and doesn't recover well once the load's released is telling you it can't deliver current the way it needs to, even if its resting voltage looked fine a few minutes earlier.
Step 6: Consider the Whole Picture
A battery that fails a load test but is otherwise young could still be a charging system problem rather than a battery problem — if the alternator isn't fully charging it in normal driving, it'll never show a healthy load-test result no matter how new it is. If load test results are borderline, it's worth also checking charging voltage with the engine running (healthy alternator output is typically noticeably above resting battery voltage, commonly cited in the 13.5–14.5V range, though check your specific vehicle's spec) before condemning the battery itself.

- Testing a battery that's simply undercharged — charge it first, then test
- Testing through corroded terminals — clean connections are step one, not optional
- Holding the load on too long — follow the tool's specified duration
- Blaming the battery for a charging system problem — a weak load test result on a young battery deserves a charging system check too
