How to Remove a Steering Ball Head (Tie Rod End or Ball Joint)

A worn steering ball head — whether it's a tie rod end or a ball joint — usually announces itself as a clunk over bumps, vague steering, or uneven tire wear, and separating the taper from its mating part is one of those jobs that punishes improvised tools. A hammer and pry bar can work eventually, but it's just as likely to damage a boot, a knuckle, or your knuckles in the process.

You'll also want penetrating oil for the joint's mounting nut, a wrench to hold the stud from spinning while you loosen the nut, and new cotter pins or self-locking hardware if your specific joint uses them.

Step 1: Loosen the Retaining Nut, Don't Remove It Yet

Break the nut loose but leave it threaded on a few turns. This protects the threads and gives the joint somewhere to land once it pops free, rather than letting it drop unexpectedly.

Step 2: Soak the Taper Joint

Apply penetrating oil around the taper where it meets the knuckle or arm and give it a few minutes to work in, especially on a joint that hasn't been disturbed in years.

Step 3: Set the Extractor

Select the correct size range on the extractor and clamp it around the joint per its design, seating it square against the mounting surface rather than at an angle.

Step 4: Apply Steady Force

Tighten the extractor's screw mechanism steadily. You'll feel and often hear a distinct pop as the taper releases — that's normal and expected, not a sign something broke.

Step 5: Remove the Nut and Separate

With the taper free, remove the retaining nut fully and separate the joint. Inspect the boot for tears and the stud for pitting or damage while you're in there.

Step 6: Install the New Joint

Fit the new joint, thread the retaining nut on, and torque to factory spec. If your specific application uses a cotter pin or other locking hardware, install fresh rather than reusing bent or fatigued pieces.

Step 7: Recheck and Road Test

Double-check the torque and any locking hardware before lowering the car. Any front-end work like this is a good moment to budget for an alignment check afterward, since ride height and toe settings can shift slightly even from a tie rod end alone.

Common Mistakes

  • Hammering the knuckle to "shock" the joint loose — can damage the knuckle itself; let the extractor's mechanical force do the work
  • Removing the nut before the joint is free — leave it threaded on for controlled release
  • Skipping the penetrating oil soak — makes the job harder than it needs to be on a joint that's been in place for years
  • Forgetting the alignment check afterward — tie rod and ball joint work both affect steering geometry
