Rear brake pad jobs used to be simple: compress the piston, swap the pads, done. Then electronic parking brakes (EPB) showed up on most modern VW, Audi, BMW, and Mercedes models, and that simple wind-back became a two-part job — one part electronic, one part mechanical. Skip the electronic part and you can burn out a caliper motor doing something that used to take thirty seconds.

If your car has an electronic parking brake on the rear (most cars from roughly the mid-2010s onward do), you'll also need a scan tool capable of putting the EPB into service/maintenance mode — a basic code reader usually won't do this, you need bidirectional control.
Step 1: Figure Out Which Caliper You Have
If your rear parking brake is a traditional cable-actuated mechanical setup, you can skip straight to Step 3. If it's electronic (a small dash switch instead of a hand lever or foot pedal for the parking brake is the giveaway), you have an EPB, and skipping the next step is how people damage the caliper motor.
Step 2: EPB Cars — Put the System in Service Mode First
On an EPB-equipped rear caliper, the motor holds the piston in place mechanically through a spindle. Compressing that piston without first commanding the motor to retract via a scan tool fights the motor directly and can burn it out or strip the internal gearing. Put the system into service/maintenance mode, confirm the caliper is in its retracted service position, and only then move on to mechanical work.
Step 3: Remove the Caliper and Old Pads
With the wheel off and the caliper unbolted from the bracket (leaving the brake line connected and the caliper supported, not hanging by the hose), pull the old pads.
Step 4: Compress the Piston
Most VW/Audi/BMW rear calipers use a twist-to-retract piston rather than a straight push-in design, because the parking brake mechanism (cable or electric) is built into the piston's threading. Use the correct adapter from the rewind kit and turn it in per the tool's direction — forcing a twist-style piston straight back with a standard C-clamp will damage it.
Step 5: Fit New Pads and Reinstall
With the piston fully retracted and correctly indexed (some designs need the piston's slots aligned to the pad's retaining tab — check before final install), fit the new pads, reinstall the caliper, and torque the mounting bolts to spec.
Step 6: EPB Cars — Exit Service Mode and Run Pad Break-In
Back at the scan tool, exit service mode to re-engage the parking brake motors, then run the brake pad break-in / EPB initialization function if your platform supports it. This resets the motor's reference position for the new, thicker pads — skip it and the parking brake can apply with the wrong clamping force or throw a fault code.
Step 7: Pump the Pedal, Check Fluid, Road Test
Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the pads against the rotor before driving, confirm the reservoir is topped off, and take it for a low-speed test including a few parking brake applications before trusting it at speed.
Common Mistakes
- Winding back an EPB caliper without service mode — the single most common way DIYers turn a brake job into a caliper replacement
- Using a straight C-clamp on a twist-style piston — damages the threading built into the piston
- Forgetting to re-index the piston slots to the pad tab — causes uneven pad wear or a rattling pad
- Skipping the pedal pump before driving — the first pedal application after any caliper work should always be a soft, deliberate test, not your first stop sign
