Leaking valve stem seals show up as blue smoke on startup or on decel that fades once the engine's running — oil pooling above the valve overnight and burning off as it's drawn back into the cylinder. On many VAG 4-cylinder engines, including the Audi A4 and VW Passat B5, replacing those seals doesn't require pulling the cylinder head. It requires a way to hold the valves shut with the head still on the car, which is exactly what an in-situ valve spring compressor does.

Tool You'll Need
- Valve Spring Compressor Tool (VAG 3362) — compresses the valve spring in place so you can swap seals without removing the head

You'll also need compressed air and an adapter to hold cylinder pressure through the spark plug hole (this is what keeps the valve from dropping into the cylinder while the spring is compressed), a magnetic pickup for keeper collets, new valve stem seals, and the valve cover gasket you'll need regardless since the cover has to come off.
Before You Start
- Confirm the symptom actually points to valve seals: smoke concentrated at startup or on deceleration that clears once you're back on the throttle is the classic seal pattern. Constant smoking under load points elsewhere — piston rings, PCV system — and this job won't fix that.
- Work one cylinder at a time, completely, before moving to the next. Never have more than one cylinder open at once.
- The engine must be at a position where the piston in the cylinder you're working on is near TDC, so it can support the valve if the air pressure momentarily drops — confirm this before removing any keepers.
Step 1: Remove the Valve Cover
Strip whatever's in the way — coil packs, cover bolts, breather hoses — and remove the valve cover to expose the valvetrain.
Step 2: Bring the Target Cylinder to TDC
Rotate the engine by hand until the cylinder you're working on is at or near top dead center on its compression stroke, so the piston is positioned to catch the valve if needed.
Step 3: Pressurize the Cylinder
Remove the spark plug from that cylinder and thread in the air fitting adapter, then apply steady compressed air pressure. This holds the valve in place from below once the spring's no longer doing that job.
Step 4: Compress the Spring
Set up the VAG 3362 compressor per its bracket points on the head and compress the valve spring down far enough to expose the keeper collets — go slowly and watch that the tool stays square to the valve stem the whole time.
Step 5: Remove the Keepers
Use a magnetic pickup to lift the collets out once they're exposed. This is the moment that air pressure earns its keep — if it drops, the valve can fall into the cylinder.
Step 6: Swap the Seal
Release the compressor slowly, pull the old seal off the valve guide, and press the new one on evenly and squarely. A cocked seal will leak just as badly as the worn one you just removed.
Step 7: Reassemble in Reverse
Recompress the spring, set the keepers back in their groove, and release the compressor slowly while confirming the keepers seat correctly — this is worth a visual double check before you move to the next cylinder, since a keeper that isn't fully seated can come apart at speed.
Step 8: Repeat for Each Cylinder, Then Reassemble
Work through each cylinder the same way, one at a time, then reinstall the valve cover with a fresh gasket, reconnect everything you disturbed, and start the engine. Watch for smoke on startup — it should be gone or dramatically reduced.
Common Mistakes
- Losing cylinder air pressure mid-job — double-check your fitting and air supply before pulling keepers
- Working more than one cylinder at a time — keep it simple, keep parts organized per cylinder
- Installing a seal at an angle — press it on straight or you haven't actually fixed anything
- Skipping the TDC position — the piston is your backup safety net if air pressure fails
