The Rule That Matters Most
Never pry against the cylinder head or fuel rail to break an injector loose. All force needs to travel along the injector's own axis via the puller — prying against surrounding components is how a straightforward injector job turns into head or rail damage.
Step 1: Relieve Fuel System Pressure
Follow the correct procedure for your specific model to safely relieve pressure before disconnecting anything.
Step 2: Disconnect the Fuel Rail and Electrical Connectors
Unbolt the fuel rail per your engine's procedure and disconnect the injector electrical connectors, keeping track of which injector came from which cylinder position.
Step 3: Set the Puller
Fit the removal tool to grip the injector body securely below its shoulder, not on the electrical connector or the top cap.
Step 4: Work It Free Gradually
Use the slide-hammer action with controlled, repeated strikes rather than trying to yank it free in one motion — a hardened O-ring will let go more predictably under steady, repeated force than a single hard pull.
Step 5: Inspect the Bore
Once out, check the injector bore in the head for carbon buildup or damage, and clean it as needed before fitting the replacement or reinstalling the original with a fresh seal.
Step 6: Fit New Seals and Reinstall
Lightly lubricate the new O-ring/seal per the injector manufacturer's instructions, seat the injector fully and squarely into its bore, and reinstall the fuel rail per the correct bolt sequence and torque.
Step 7: Reconnect and Test
Reconnect the electrical connectors (matched to the correct cylinder), restore fuel pressure, and check for leaks at each injector before considering the job done.
