A clunk from underneath on take-off or when transitioning between throttle and coast on a Golf R, RS3, or TT/TTS/TTRS is one of the most common driveline complaints on the Haldex all-wheel-drive MQB platform — and while there are a few possible causes, a worn or misaligned prop shaft center bearing is high on the list. This is a bearing that supports the two-piece prop shaft roughly at its midpoint, and when its mount degrades or shifts, you get exactly that clunk.

- Aluminum Prop Shaft Bearing Alignment Cover — a direct-fit, no-drill replacement for the factory plastic cover that holds the center bearing in correct alignment
You'll also need to safely raise and support the car with clear access to the prop shaft running under the center tunnel, and standard hand tools for the shaft coupling and bearing bracket fasteners.
Why the Factory Cover Is the Weak Point
The factory center bearing support uses a plastic cover/bracket that can flex, crack, or let the bearing shift slightly out of true alignment over time and miles, especially on cars that see hard launches or track use where the driveline sees repeated shock loading. Once the bearing's alignment drifts even slightly, you get vibration or a clunk as the two shaft sections load and unload against each other under torque changes.
Step 1: Confirm the Symptom Points Here
A clunk specifically tied to a Haldex-equipped car transitioning between drive and coast, or a vibration that scales with road speed rather than engine RPM, points toward the driveline rather than the engine or transmission mounts. Step 2: Raise and Support the Car
Get clear access underneath to the center of the prop shaft, where it transitions from the front section to the rear section through the center support bearing.
Step 3: Remove the Factory Cover/Bracket
Unbolt the factory plastic bearing cover from its mounting point on the chassis. Support the shaft as you do this so nothing drops or hangs on the CV joints unsupported.
Step 4: Inspect the Bearing and Shaft
With the cover off, check the bearing itself for play, roughness when rotated, or visible wear, and check the shaft sections and CV boots for damage. This is also the moment to confirm the clunk isn't actually a CV joint or a loose shaft coupling bolt, since both live in the same area.
Step 5: Install the Aluminum Alignment Cover
Fit the aluminum cover in place of the factory plastic one, using the existing mounting points — it's a direct bolt-in replacement, no drilling or modification. Torque all fasteners to factory spec.
Step 6: Recheck Every Fastener You Touched
Before lowering the car, double back over every bolt on the shaft coupling and bearing bracket. A loose driveline fastener at speed is not a small problem.
Step 7: Road Test
Drive through the same conditions that originally produced the clunk — hard takeoff, on/off throttle transitions — and confirm it's gone. If a clunk persists after this fix, it points toward the CV joints or shaft couplings themselves rather than the center bearing alignment, and it's worth inspecting those next.

- Assuming every driveline clunk is the center bearing — rule out engine/trans mounts and CV joints first if the symptom is ambiguous
- Not supporting the shaft while the cover is off — unsupported CV joints can be stressed beyond their working angle
- Under-torquing driveline fasteners — these see real rotational force; use the actual spec, not a guess
