A failing fuel pump or sending unit on a VW or Audi almost always means accessing the pump assembly through a lock ring at the top of the tank — and that lock ring uses a wide, shallow notch pattern that a strap wrench or a pair of pliers will just slip across instead of turning. Fighting it with the wrong tool is how people crack the plastic ring or gouge the tank flange.

You'll also need to relieve fuel system pressure safely before opening anything (typically via a fuse pull and a few seconds of cranking), a way to prevent fuel vapor buildup in your workspace, and a catch container, since some fuel will be present at the sender unit even with the pump depressurized.
Safety First
This job involves an open fuel system. Work in a well-ventilated space, away from any ignition source, and relieve system pressure per your specific model's procedure before loosening anything. Keep a fire extinguisher within reach.
Step 1: Access the Sender Unit
Depending on your model, this is either through a service panel under the rear seat or trunk floor, or requires the tank itself to be lowered for access — confirm which applies to your car before starting, since it changes the scope of the job significantly.
Step 2: Disconnect Fuel Lines and Electrical Connectors
With pressure relieved, disconnect the fuel supply and return lines (catching any residual fuel) and the electrical connector for the pump and sender.
Step 3: Fit the Tool to the Lock Ring
Seat the T10202 fully into the lock ring's notches — it should sit flat and engage every tooth, not just catch on a couple.
Step 4: Break the Ring Loose
Using a wrench or ratchet on the tool's drive tab, turn the ring counter-clockwise with steady, even pressure. These rings are usually only hand-tight from the factory (they're not meant to be torqued hard), so if it's fighting you, double-check the tool is properly seated rather than adding more force.
Step 5: Lift Out the Assembly Carefully
Once the ring is free, lift the pump/sender assembly straight up and out slowly — the float arm is fragile and easy to bend or snap if you rush this or pull at an angle.
Step 6: Inspect the Seal
Check the rubber gasket that seals the assembly to the tank. These harden over time; if yours looks compressed, cracked, or doesn't spring back when you flex it, replace it rather than reusing it — a bad seal here means a fuel smell or an actual leak later.
Step 7: Install and Reverse
Fit the new or serviced assembly, seat the gasket evenly around the opening, and use the same tool to hand-tighten the lock ring back to its original position — don't overtighten past where it seats naturally. Reconnect the electrical connector and fuel lines, then cycle the key to prime the system and check for leaks before starting the engine.

- Using pliers or a strap wrench — slips and rounds the ring's notches, or worse, punctures the plastic
- Skipping pressure relief — fuel under pressure at an open connection is a real hazard
