A worn lower engine mount on an MQB-platform VW or Audi shows up as a shudder on takeoff, a clunk on gear changes, or a vibration through the shifter and pedals that gets worse as the mount's rubber degrades. Full mount replacement is expensive and often unnecessary — on most MQB cars, the mount body outlasts the rubber insert inside it by a wide margin. Replacing just the insert is a fraction of the cost and, if you're already in there, a good moment to add some chassis stiffening too.

Tools You'll Need
- Lower Engine Mount Insert (MQB) — direct replacement for the worn rubber core inside the factory mount housing
- MQB Tunnel Brace Chassis Stiffener — optional, but worth adding while the underside is already apart
- Front Subframe Brace — also optional, tightens up front-end feel alongside the mount swap
You'll also need a jack and stands (or a lift), a floor jack with a padded block to support the engine/transmission briefly, and standard hand tools for the mount bracket fasteners.
How to Tell If It's the Mount and Not Something Else
Before you're under the car: with the engine idling in neutral, have a helper watch the engine from the bay while you gently rock the car or blip the throttle. Excess movement concentrated at the lower mount, combined with a shudder that's worst from a stop and fades as engine RPM rises, points to the mount. A clunk specifically on the 1-2 or 2-1 shift under load is one of the more common insert-failure symptoms on these cars.
Step 1: Support the Engine
With the car raised and supported, position a padded jack under the engine or transmission (whichever side you're working from) and take up just enough weight to relieve pressure on the mount you're about to open — not lift the powertrain, just unload the mount.
Step 2: Remove the Mount Bracket
Unbolt the lower mount bracket from the subframe and/or the mount body, following your specific chassis's fastener layout. Support the mount housing as you separate it so nothing drops once it's unbolted.
Step 3: Press Out the Old Insert
The worn rubber insert presses or bolts out of the mount housing depending on your exact mount design. Inspect the housing itself for cracks or corrosion while it's out — if the housing is damaged, the insert alone won't fix the underlying problem.
Step 4: Install the New Insert
Seat the new insert fully and evenly into the housing, making sure it's not cocked to one side, then reinstall the bracket and torque all fasteners to spec.
Step 5: Remove Your Support and Road Test
Lower the jack from under the powertrain slowly and confirm the mount is taking the load smoothly with no unusual noise. Take it for a drive covering the same conditions that originally showed the symptom — takeoff from a stop, gear changes under load — and confirm it's resolved.
While You're Under There: Chassis Bracing
The tunnel brace and front subframe brace both bolt into existing factory mounting points — no cutting, no drilling — and reduce the flex in the chassis under hard cornering or braking. They don't fix a bad mount, but on a car you're already stiffening up with a fresh mount insert, they're a natural next step to tighten up overall chassis feel.
Common Mistakes
- Assuming any drivetrain clunk is the mount — worn subframe bushings and CV joint play can feel similar; confirm before you buy parts
- Fully lifting the powertrain instead of just unloading it — can stress other mounts and hoses that weren't designed to take that load
- Reusing stretched or corroded mount bolts — cheap insurance against a repeat job
