Before common rail took over, VW's Pumpe Düse (PD) diesels — the 1.9 and 2.0 TDI found in Golf MK4/MK5, Jetta, Passat B5/B6, and Touran — used unit injectors instead, each one generating its own injection pressure locally via a rocker arm driven off the camshaft. That design difference matters for a timing belt job: there's no separate high-pressure pump sprocket to lock like on a common-rail EA288, but the camshaft pulley itself is slotted and adjustable, which changes how you set final timing.

You'll also need a torque wrench, standard hand tools for the accessory drive and covers, and the correct belt and tensioner kit for your exact engine code (1.9 TDI ASZ/ATD/BLS and 2.0 TDI BKD/BMM/BMN, among others, all have detail differences).

What's Different From a Common-Rail Job

You're only locking two things here — crankshaft and camshaft — not three. There's no HPFP sprocket to worry about because the injection pressure is generated locally at each injector rather than by a belt-driven high-pressure pump. What PD engines add instead is an adjustable camshaft pulley: the pulley mounts to the cam through three bolts riding in slotted holes, which lets you fine-tune cam position after the belt is tensioned.

Step 1: Remove Covers and Accessory Drive

Strip the serpentine belt and timing covers to expose the crank pulley and camshaft sprocket.

Step 2: Rotate to TDC and Lock the Crank

Bring the crankshaft to Top Dead Center on cylinder 1 and fit the crankshaft locking tool from the timing kit.

Step 3: Lock the Camshaft

Try to insert the camshaft locking pin into the sprocket hub. If it won't seat — which is common, since belt stretch and prior adjustments shift the slotted pulley over time — loosen the three pulley bolts just enough to rotate the camshaft slightly until the pin drops in cleanly, then leave the bolts loose for now.

Step 4: Remove and Install the Belt

With both crank and cam locked, remove the old belt, then route the new one around the sprockets with tension on the non-tensioner side.

Step 5: Tension and Snug the Cam Pulley

Set belt tension per the tensioner's specification, then torque the three camshaft pulley bolts — commonly cited around 25 Nm on many PD variants, though confirm the exact figure for your engine code rather than assuming it's universal across the PD range.

Step 6: Remove the Locks and Verify

Pull both locking tools, rotate the crankshaft two full turns by hand, and bring it back to TDC. Try both locking tools again — if the camshaft pin won't go back in, loosen the three pulley bolts, nudge the cam pulley into position with the pin partially inserted, and re-torque. This settling-in step is normal on PD engines and isn't a sign anything's wrong; it's just how the adjustable pulley design works.

Step 7: While You're In There — Check the Cam Followers

PD engines are well known for camshaft lobe and roller-rocker wear, especially on cars that have gone long between oil changes or run the wrong oil spec. With the cover off, it costs nothing to inspect the lobes and followers for flat spots or scoring — catching this now is a lot cheaper than catching it after a lobe fails.

Step 8: Reassemble

Reinstall covers and the accessory drive, reconnect the battery, and start the engine.

Common Mistakes

  • Assuming this is identical to a common-rail TDI job — no HPFP lock needed, but the adjustable cam pulley is a step common-rail engines don't have
  • Forcing the camshaft locking pin — loosen the pulley bolts and nudge the cam instead of forcing a pin that won't seat
  • Skipping the two-turn recheck — PD cam pulleys commonly need a second small adjustment after the belt settles
  • Ignoring visible cam follower wear — a well-documented PD failure point that's cheap to catch during a belt job and expensive to catch later
