The classic VW Golf, Jetta, and Beetle platforms (MK2 through MK4, roughly 1985–2006) are still on the road in real numbers, and front control arm bushings are one of the most common wear items on cars this age — decades of rubber degradation shows up as clunking over bumps, wandering steering, and uneven front tire wear. Polyurethane bushings are the classic upgrade here: they last longer than rubber and tighten up the vague feeling these cars develop with age.

Tool You'll Need

You'll also want penetrating oil (these fasteners are often decades old and corroded), a press or a large vise and appropriately sized sockets to press the old bushings out and new ones in, a torque wrench, and jack stands.

Step 1: Soak the Fasteners

Do this well ahead of time — ideally overnight — on a car this age. Control arm bolts on cars that have seen 20+ years of road salt and moisture are a common source of snapped fasteners if you go in dry.

Step 2: Remove the Control Arm

Unbolt the control arm from the subframe and the ball joint from the steering knuckle, supporting everything as you separate it.

Step 3: Press Out the Old Bushings

Using a press or a vise with appropriately sized sockets as spacers, press the old rubber bushings out of the control arm. These are often badly degraded on a car this age — don't be surprised if they come out in pieces.

Step 4: Press In the New Polyurethane Bushings

Grease the new bushings with a silicone-based bushing grease (polyurethane needs lubrication that rubber doesn't) and press them into the control arm evenly and squarely, using the metal sleeves included in the kit.

Step 5: Reinstall the Control Arm

Bolt the control arm back to the subframe and reconnect the ball joint to the knuckle, torquing everything to factory spec. Ideally do the final bushing torque with the suspension at ride height rather than fully drooped, to avoid pre-stressing the new bushings.

Step 6: Recheck and Align

Double-check every fastener before lowering the car, and budget for an alignment afterward — fresh, tighter bushings change how the suspension geometry settles compared to the old, worn ones.

Common Mistakes

  • Skipping the penetrating oil soak — the single biggest cause of a snapped bolt on a car this age
  • Dry-fitting the polyurethane bushings — they need grease to avoid squeaking and premature wear; rubber doesn't, poly does
  • Torquing at full droop — pre-loads the bushing incorrectly and shortens its life
  • Skipping the post-job alignment — tighter bushings noticeably change how the front end settles
